What is an at-large bid?
An at-large bid is the committee's own invitation. The team did not win its conference tournament. The committee still judged its season strong enough.
The second way into the field
Teams reach March Madness two ways.
One way is winning your conference tournament.
That earns an automatic bid, no questions asked.
The other way is this invitation.
You lost your conference tournament final.
Or you fell short even earlier.
The committee can still pick you.
It picks the strongest seasons left.
Who hands these bids out
A selection committee makes every pick.
There are separate men's and women's committees.
Members cannot vote for their own teams.
NCAA.com states that conflict rule plainly.
The committee works in three phases.
First it selects the at-large teams.
Then it seeds all 76 teams.
Then it places them in the bracket.

Common questions
What is an at-large bid?
An at-large bid is a March Madness invitation the selection committee gives a team that did not win its conference tournament. The committee judges the team's whole season strong enough to earn one of the spots the automatic bids do not fill.
How many at-large bids are there?
One for every spot the automatic bids do not fill. In the 68-team era, NCAA.com's selection explainer counted 37 at-large picks. The 2027 field holds 76 teams, so more at-large spots open up.
