What are NET rankings?

NET rankings are the committee's main sorting tool. NET stands for NCAA Evaluation Tool. It ranks teams for selection and seeding.

What NET stands for

NET means NCAA Evaluation Tool.

It arrived for the 2018-19 season.

It replaced the older RPI ranking.

The RPI used only winning percentages.

The NCAA built NET with Google Cloud.

Men and women get separate lists.

Each list uses only its own games.

The two parts of the NET

Part one is the Team Value Index.

It rewards beating strong teams.

Road and neutral wins count extra.

Part two is adjusted net efficiency.

It tracks points per hundred possessions.

It adjusts for foe and place.

Winning percentage alone no longer counts.

Scoring margin no longer counts either.

No past season data sneaks in.

How the committee uses it

The NET is a sorting tool only.

It never decides the field alone.

The committee still weighs the full season.

There is no set formula for bids.

New rankings post daily in season.

The first list comes in December.

It is built to peak in March.

Quadrants sort wins by strength

Team sheets sort games into four quadrants.

Quadrant 1 holds the hardest wins.

Quadrant 4 holds the easiest games.

The men's ranges sit below.

QuadrantHome foeNeutral foeRoad foe
11 to 301 to 501 to 75
231 to 7551 to 10076 to 135
376 to 160101 to 200136 to 240
4161 to 353201 to 353241 to 353

Place matters as much as rank.

Road wins get the widest range.

Common questions

What are NET rankings?

NET rankings are the NCAA Evaluation Tool rankings, the selection committee's primary sorting tool since the 2018-19 season. They combine the Team Value Index with adjusted net efficiency, and they replaced the RPI.

What is a Quad 1 win?

A Quad 1 win is a win over a top team in the NET rankings: at home against a team ranked 1 to 30, at a neutral site against 1 to 50, or on the road against 1 to 75. Quad 1 wins are the strongest wins a team can show the committee.
